Danger of Oven Cleaner

I picked up my neighbor yesterday to take her on an errand, and she told me that she got a bad burn at work. My neighbor is in housekeeping and works at a large banquet hall. When I asked her how she got burned, she said she was cleaning the oven, and the OVEN CLEANER burned through her pants to burn her skin! It was not a small burn, either!

When I looked up the ingredients in oven cleaner, is saw this main ingredient: monoethanolamine. So I looked up the safety data sheet.

Then I found another news story where a small child died within 24 hours of ingesting a small quantity of oven cleaner! I don't know, these don't look like risks that are worth a quick and easy oven cleaning... My can of Eazy-off is now in the trash!

  1. MEA, when being poured, creates a chemical mist in the air, and if you think you're not inhaling any of that oven cleaner coming from that aerosol can, the short bus will be by soon for you. There is also Diethanolamine and Sodium Hydroxide in Easy Off. Both are nasty. We have sodium hydroxide 50% at work and the ph is 14 (7 is neutral). If Easy Off is used on aluminum, the metal serves as a room-temperature catalyst, breaking down the NaOH and releasing flammable hydrogen gas. Good stuff!!

If you really researched all the products in your home, you would be shocked at what goes in them and I guarantee you would never buy them again... This goes not only for household cleaners, but personal care products as well.

  5. Yes, oven cleaner is not the only dangerous chemical that is used for household cleaning. I have had a hard time with chemicals due to asthma. Over the past 2 years we have begun using Norwex Enviro Products for all of our cleaning. Most of the time we use just their cloth and water. When more than that is needed, they have enzyme cleaners that you can use. One of the enzyme cleaners is an oven cleaner. I would suggest checking out www.greentreeclean.com for more information.

  6. My boyfriend works as a KP and he was ordered to clean one of the ovens with industrial strength oven cleaner.

What were they given as protection? A thin pair of latex gloves. He has burnt fingers, a burnt arm and yellow peeling fingernails. They didn't even give them goggles or a facemask!

He reeked of bleach when he got in and I just shoved him straight in the shower. I'm SO ANGRY! It's completely illegal to get them to do that with just latex gloves! UGGH! He plans on getting a new job and reporting the hell out of them!

  7. Thanks for posting the data sheet. Really scary stuff. People must pay more attention when buying any sort of cleaning product from the store. And of course always wear the necessary protective clothing.

  9. Lemon juice is another cleanser which is easy to find. An electric kettle or jug will come clean if a lemon is cut up, placed in the receptacle and brought to the boil. Let the water stand till cold and repeat if necessary. Lemon juice in water makes an effective bleach. Soaking whites in a bucket of soapy water together with a cup of lemon juice will help whiten them. The same quantity of cloudy ammonia will have a similar effect.

  10. Hi I just recently went over to my brother house to help him clean and he put me in charge of oven duty. He had easy off (heavy duty). I did read the directions and told me to where gloves. Unfortunately there were no cleaning gloves at his place so I took the risk and started to clean. I didn't feel anything at first until I went to rinse my hands off. I well and slippery substance on my hands and wrists. So I contained to rinse. I applied soap and hot water. But still it felt slippery. I didn't rly care so I dried my hands off and got back to work. After I finished I looked at the can to see the dangers of this product just because my hands were feeling so weird. The can said to get emergency help fast if exposed to skin. I wasmt going to go to the hospital but I did panic a little. Later that day my hands kept getting worse and worse and worse. The next morning I woke up went down stairs to take a shower and when my hands touched the water I felt a sharp burn. I looked down at my hands and they were all black with peeling skin. I went to the doctor and they said it was a severe burn and gave me antibiotics. A few weeks later I was alright. But it was painful! I just don't understand why this company would make a product that could be so harmful and dangerous. If I had gotten that in my mouth or eyes I would probably be in the hospital. I won't be useing this product ever again.

  13. People, you gotta read all the labels on the product, doesn't matter what. When something mentions wearing gloves at least three times, guess what? It's probably good to wear gloves. There's all the info you'd need on a can of Easy Off. If you choose to ignore the safety protocol & use the product then get an injury, don't give the product a bad rating. Instead, give yourself a bad rating. Students make NoAH in first year Chem. It's involved in multiple lab exercises. If you show up without lab coat, gloves & eye protection, you don't get to participate & fail that lab. In trade schools, same thing. You show up to a workshop without steel-toes, gloves & eye safety, no participate. Learning & common sense doesn't stop after graduation. You can train idiots but you can't fix stupid. If you got hurt from not following instructions when it's presented to you, you're one of the two. Use gloves, safety glasses & a half-mask when using Easy Off. You will then find that the product works as intended & does a damn fine job too. One last thing, Easy Off is meant to clean off stubborn, baked on grease. The grease got there through splatters and such from heating biological foods. Didja think nothing was gonna happen if ya let it touch your flesh?

    1. Thank you. I'd like to see all of the people who are complaining try to clean an oven some other way than Easy Off. I wouldn't want to. Just follow the safety precautions. I used Easy Off a few days ago to clean, not the oven, but the burner drip pans and the space underneath the stove top. I just noticed that the skin on the palm of my right hand is peeling. I was wondering if Easy Off caused it and that's what brought me here. Well, guess what? I didn't wear gloves so it's my own fault.
